This condition occurs when the brain or body loses its oxygen supply completely, typically as a result of hypoxia. Anoxia of the brain is particularly harmful and can lead to permanent brain damage after just four to five minutes of oxygen deprivation. Anoxia that lasts longer than four to five minutes can result in several long-term complications or even death. This is due to the fact that without oxygen, cells in the brain can die leading to impairment of vital body functions. Anoxia symptoms can be delayed and can sometimes take multiple days or even weeks to appear.
